Bobby has also organized his friends into a basketball team, the Owls, and with only Bobby as a stand-in coach, the boys begin to compete and dream of winning a local tournament. The poignant, well-articulated coming-of-age moments deepen the heart-pounding suspense, though, and Bobby's questions of what it means to be honorable and to feel attraction to a female friend will draw readers as much as will the exciting mystery.
Gilda Joyce: The Ghost Sonata by Jennifer Allison ·
Reading level: Ages 9-12(Middle School) ·
Hardcover: 288 pages ·
Publisher: Dutton Juvenile (August 16, 2007) ·
ISBN-10: 0525478086 · ISBN-13: 978-0525478089

Killer ghosts and tarot death cards give spooky messages in the latest about the smart teen detective, Gilda Joyce. Have these authors managed to forge the perfect storm of young adult literature? Not quite, but it is pretty darn good. Hot on the trail of the unknown criminal are two unlikely collaborators, P. Q. Delicata, (real name Roni, which is short for Petronella), an intrepid newshound for the school paper, and Brian Bain, a thirteen-year-old claiming that he is fourteen. The pair first met in the principal's office. Brian had the slight problem of unauthorized use of the chemistry lab and Roni violated the school's zero-tolerance violence policy. From this unlikely connection, the amateur sleuths scour the town of Bloodwater, uncovering clues, suspects, and plenty of red herrings. Very short chapters-often less than two pages-mark this book as a quick read for readers younger than ninth grade. An alternating narrative format provides voices for Roni, Brian, and Alicia. Roni and Brian are clever and likeable teens, each determined to solve the felony, but astute mystery fans will home in on Alicia's issues and subsequent dilemma. Historical

The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain by Peter Sis
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux
Pub. Children are encouraged to report on their families and fellow students. Parents learn to keep their opinions to themselves." Text along the bottom margin reveals young Sís's own experience: "He didn't question what he was being told. Then he found out there were things he wasn't told." The secret police, with tidy suits and pig faces, intrude into every drawing, watching and listening. As Sís grows to manhood, Eastern Europe discovers the Beatles, and the "Prague Spring of 1968" promises liberation and freedom. Instead, Soviet tanks roll in, returning the city to its previous restrictive climate. Sís rebels when possible, and in the book's final spreads, depicts himself in a bicycle, born aloft by wings made from his artwork, flying toward America and freedom, as the Berlin Wall crumbles below.
